Varsity Basketball Advances to Second Round
The Glen Cove High School Big Red Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated Floral Park in its first-round playoff matchup at Glen Cove High School, winning 57-54. The team overcame a 10-point deficit, led by Kewan Beebe¹s 26 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, the ride ended there as the Big Red lost to Jericho in the Class A quarterfinal.
According to Coach Peter Falen, this year¹s team was dedicated and hardworking, with six seniors and five underclassmen filling out the roster.
Seniors Mauro Carignano, Dahkeem Williams, Johnny Fiorino, Chris Theodorou, Yadiyah Letellier, and Nick Basile have led by example, with help from returning starters Frankie Mickens, Mike Acerra, Tommy Ziegen and Brandon Deloatch. Kewan, commonly referred to as "Cash" by his teammates, led the team in scoring this year, averaging more than 18 points per game. He is also ranked third in the County in three-point field goals.
For the first time in 22 years, the team won the Conference III championship, finishing the regular season with a record of 14-3 in Conference III, 10-2 in league play.
Congratulations to Coach Falen and the team on a fine season.

Acrobats Abound
Students at Landing Elementary School took part in a circus without ever having to leave for the big top. The Landing School gymnasium served as the setting for the National Circus Project, an arts-in-education program that teaches young children balance, agility, hand-eye coordination, concentration and discipline through a series of circus-like activities that are safe, yet very rewarding. Circus Project instructors taught the Landing students the art of juggling, plate spinning and the use of “devil sticks,” among other fun physical challenges. All of the Circus Project instructors have either professional circus experience or a performance background.
Based in Westbury, NY, the National Circus Project has conducted workshops in schools throughout the eastern United States since 1984, with many appearances abroad as well.

Parents Partner with Schools and Community for Student Literacy
As part of the two-week national celebration of literacy known as PARP (Parents as Reading Partners), elementary schools in the Glen Cove School District welcomed guest readers from throughout the community to spend some time with young children sharing their favorite books and promoting their love of reading.
PTA leaders, school district administrators, teachers, staff members, and even some older students joined readers representing the City of Glen Cove Police and Fire departments, elected officials from various branches of local government, the senior citizen population and other dedicated volunteers from in and around Glen Cove for respective Community Reader events held at the district’s elementary schools.
Glen Cove Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph A. Laria and Glen Cove City Major Ralph Suozzi were among the long list of invited guests who volunteered a few minutes out of their workday to promote literacy, much to the young hosts’ delight. The Mayor even donated small flashlights to children at Connolly School so they could read at night. Connolly School students also stopped by Gribbin School to read to the younger elementary school students.
In addition to the Community Readers, the schools hosted various activities throughout the two weeks of PARP. To kick off the adventure at Deasy School, Principal Nomi Rosen dressed as Ms. Frizzle, a character from The Magic School Bus series, while other principals ‘challenged’ their students to read a certain number of books in exchange for performing a task of the students’ choice. Gribbin School welcomed Alyssa Satin Capucilli, author of the popular children’s series “Biscuit the Dog.” Schools also held pajama reading days, ‘bring a stuffed animal to read with’ days, and many other events to enhance the reading experience and make it more fun.
PARP is held every year in the Glen Cove School District. This year’s theme was “Travel Into a Book; Enjoy Your Adventure.” Fifth graders Jasmine James of Landing Elementary School and Alontra Schuck of Connolly Elementary School each designed a logo that serves as the official designs for PARPP 2012.

AP Scholars Honored
The Glen Cove Board of Education and Glen Cove High School (GCHS) administration recently honored students who were named Advanced Placement (AP) Scholars for the 2011-12 school year. Certificates were awarded by GCHS Principal Dr, Joseph Hinton and Assistant Principals Sheryl Goodine and Allen Hudson to those AP Scholars who were in attendance at the January 9 Board meeting. The ceremony is scheduled every January when many of AP Scholars who have already graduated return to Glen Cove while still on college break.
The College Board named 28 former and current Glen Cove High School students as AP Scholars this fall following their successful performance on the AP Exams. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams.
AP Scholars scoring 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams are: Heather Artinian, Lorraine Ballero, Carly Baron, Ariana Cavallone, Remi Farnan, Alex Filippone, Rina Hernandez, Robert MacDonald, Erin McCabe, Lazar Mirkovic, Briana Moglia, Julia Oh, Edward Reyes-Benigno, Christian Ring, Viola Sawyer, Aaron Sylver, Bryon Wilkins, and Kellie Williams.
AP Scholars with Honor with an average score of 3.25 or higher on all AP Exams or 3 or higher on four or more exams are: Alison Abrams, Elias Blinkoff, Nicholas Manzione, Jakub Micko, Risa Nagel, and Eduardo Silva.
AP Scholars with Distinction with an average score of 3.5 of higher on all AP Exams or 3 or higher on five or more of these exams are: Alexandra Gerin, Rahul Nath, Katherine Serrano, and Gorov Sodhi.
Through 34 different college-level courses and exams, AP provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to earn college credit or advanced placement and stand out in the college admission process. Each exam is developed by a committee of college and university faculty and AP teachers, ensuring that AP Exams are aligned with the same high standards expected by college faculty at some of the nation’s leading liberal arts and research institutions. More than 3,800 colleges and universities annually receive AP scores. Most four-year colleges in the United States provide credit and/or advanced placement for qualifying exam scores. Research consistently shows that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP Exams (based on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest) typically experience greater academic success in college and have higher college graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP.
