Finley Takes On Island Trees
Undefeated Finley’s football team took on Island Trees on Oct. 13 and fumbled on their first three offensive drives in the first quarter. Island Trees quickly capitalized and raced out to a 19-0 lead. Finley got on board in the second quarter when halfback Eamon Doyle broke a 35-yard run deep into Island Trees territory. The drive was finished by quarterback Victor Vaughan.
Down by 19 points, Finley put together a scoring drive, which culminated with Vaughan scoring from five yards out. The Glen Cove defense came up big late in the second quarter when cornerback Doyle intercepted an Island Trees pass and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown.
After Island Trees extended their lead, 32-19, Finley quarterback Francesco Sfoggia answered back with a 60-yard touchdown run. The team’s defense stopped Island Trees on their next offensive possession and scored again when Jovanne Howe broke off a long 65-yard touchdown. Fullback Jason Garcia ran in the extra point, tying the score at 32.
Finley’s defense stopped another Island Trees fourth-down attempt and Vaughan scored on a 30-yard touchdown. He then ran in the extra point, and Finley took the lead, 39-32. Middle school football rules add an optional fifth quarter to the game, which saw Island Trees score another touchdown. Linebacker Jason Garcia blocked the Island Trees extra point kick and Glen Cove held a 39-38 advantage. Vaughan added his fourth touchdown of the game with a 20-yard rush and also added the extra point, increasing Glen Cove’s lead, 46-38.
The exciting game ended with a Glen Cove victory, 46-44.
Finley Football off to a Great Start
Finley Middle School’s football team is off to a great season and is looking forward to building on its success throughout the remainder of the fall.
The team opened their 2016 season on Sept. 30 with a hard-fought win over Massapequa’s Berner Middle School. In the first quarter of the game, Berner intercepted a Finley pass and scored the first touchdown. Berner struck again, leading to a 12-0 Finley deficit. Finley fought back in the second quarter when fullback Matthew Coyle scored on a run up the middle, and quarterback Victor Vaughan took the ball down the field for a 45-yard touchdown. Vaughan passed to tight end Anthony Schettino for the extra point, putting Finley ahead at the half. In the third quarter, Berner took the lead before Finley halfback Javonne Howe scored on a 40-yard touchdown. Quarterback Francesco Sfoggia passed to wide receiver Joseph Nazianzeno for the extra point and Finley took a 20-18 lead. In the final quarter of the game, Vaughan scored from 5 yards out, making it 26-18. Berner scored again with seconds remaining, resulting in a 26-24 Glen Cove win.
On Oct. 5, Finley Middle School took on Oyster Bay, who quickly took a 7-0 lead. Finley answered back with a 70-yard touchdown by halfback Howe. Fullback Jason Garcia ran in the extra point, making it 7-7. In the second quarter, Finley’s defense made a goal line stand. Vaughan sacked the Oyster Bay quarterback twice, and Finley stopped Oyster Bay on the 1-yard line. With Glen Cove on offense again, Vaughan scored on a 99-yard touchdown run, putting Glen Cove on top, 14-7. Later in the quarter, Vaughan struck again with a 40-yard touchdown. Schettino scored the extra point, making it 21-7 at the half. In the fourth quarter, Oyster Bay cut the lead to 21-14. Glen Cove answered with a 35-yard pass down to the Oyster Bay 5-yard line by Sfoggia to receiver Nazianzeno. Halfback Howe finished the drive with a touchdown run. Oyster Bay scored again on the final play of the game, making the final score Glen Cove 27, Oyster Bay 20.
